Getting started

Install, turn on the 3D gallery, and add 3D to your first product.

The RenderX shows a studio-lit 3D model of your ring as the first slide of your Shopify product gallery. Setting it up takes a few minutes and never touches your theme's code.

1. Install the app

Install The RenderX from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions. The app asks only for what it needs: to read and update your products (to attach the 3D viewer to them) and to read and write files (to put the 3D model and its pictures in your own Shopify Files). It has no access to your theme files or your customers.

The app opens inside your Shopify admin with a short checklist.

Click Turn on in theme editor. Your theme editor opens with the The RenderX 3D gallery embed selected. Switch it on and click Save. The checklist step completes on its own once your store shows a 3D model.

More detail: Turn on the 3D gallery (app embed).

3. Add 3D to your first product

Click Choose a product and pick it. Under What is this piece? choose Ring (the default), Pendant, Chain, Bracelet or Other. A ring is shown standing up and lying down, with the ring views below. Every other piece is upright and never lying down, and gets views made for its type: a pendant, chain or other piece hangs facing shoppers, and a bracelet stands on its edge with its setting on top. Each has five views: Front, Three-quarter, Side, From above and Close-up. Then either:

  • Upload file: drop your Rhino .3dm file (up to 150 MB), or
  • From a link: paste a Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box or direct https link to it and click Use this link (it checks the link first; How do I get a share link? shows the steps for each drive).

Your browser converts the file. You'll see the steps as they happen: Reading file → Converting → Detecting metal and stones → Rendering pictures (3) → Uploading → Publishing. When it says 3D is live on this product, it is.

Conversion runs in your browser, so use a desktop computer with Chrome, Edge or Safari. You can still manage your products from a phone.

Store on a Shopify trial? Shopify doesn't let stores on a trial plan upload 3D model (.glb) files to Shopify Files. Choose a paid Shopify plan first. Development stores work.

Before you choose: Where is my design file? explains exactly what each option keeps.

4. Preview it on your store

Click Open product page. The 3D ring is the first slide of the gallery, with a small "3D" badge on its thumbnail. Shoppers can switch metals, turn the ring freely in any direction (all the way round, over the top and underneath, like a CAD viewer), tap the views in the position bar (Hero top, Profile, Table top, Laid down and Close-up unless you choose others: the ring stands up or lies down as the view needs), go full screen and reset the view.

Choose the views shoppers get

Settings → General → Display → Position bar: pick up to six views from the list and put them in order, and choose the default view: the first picture shoppers see, the pictures shown before the 3D loads, and where Reset goes. Laid down views lay the ring on its side; the others stand it up, and the ring moves between the two as the view changes. This bar is for rings. Pendants, chains and bracelets show their own type's views instead, and you can change those on the product's Settings tab. A product can have its own bar on its Settings tab (with a live preview). Changing a default view renders that product's pictures again in the background. Products you added before the position bar keep their earlier views (Front, Side, Top, Angle, Close-up) until you change them on the product's Settings tab.

5. Optional: follow the metal variant

If the product has a metal option (for example 18k Yellow Gold / 18k Rose Gold / Platinum), map each value to a metal and the ring changes when the shopper picks a variant. See Metal follows your variant picker.
